This is the sight that met us when we took the lid off of the pressure canner last week…oh no!!!Β This happens from time to time and it happened twice last week πΒ At least it was only one jar each time πΒ So far we’ve canned 50 quarts of green beans, 31 quarts of peaches, 29 pints of tomato sauce and 7 quarts of corn.Β Can you tell what we’ve been doing lately?! π

The Joys and Woes of Canning
Oh dear! We’ve canned beans before, and I don’t recall this ever happening! I wonder what causes it….
I know…I wish I knew!

I would be curious if they are newer jars, maybe they are not made as well as they used to be? Or maybe old jars?
I’m not sure…we should have paid more attention π

Oh my lands!!!!
This can happen if the rings are screwed on too tight before processing in the canner. Just twist the ring until it is barely snug, not tight. This is what I’ve always been told. I’ve been canning for over 29 years and I’ve never had a jar break in the canner. Maybe I’m just lucky. lol. Happy canning!
Thank you Sharon π We usually try to make sure we only screw them on snugly, like you said, but we could have very well not been paying attention and screwed that one on too tight π We’ll have to pay closer attention to our lid screwing, lol!
o that is SO not fun! pretty sure we’ve done that with a can of tomatoes. WISH WE WERE CANNING RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (haven’t hit that mode yet π
