As we mentioned in our ‘Summer Summary‘, we decided to give the bathroom a makeover while Mommy was down in Florida, to surprise her 🙂
A few years ago we had painted it blue, to match the blue in the linoleum, but the blues did NOT match and just did not look right. Mommy had originally wanted it to be lavender, but we were sure that would clash too much with the floor. Well, this blue clashed with the floor, too!
{Before}
Anna and Cassia had the idea to do it during the week that Mommy was gone, and they wanted to paint it purple. All I could think of was all the work it was to cut in all the corners and I still wasn’t sure purple (or rather lavender) was going to look right.
[another ‘before’ angle]
But since they said they’d do all the painting, I decided there wasn’t any reason to oppose it 😀
Leah remembered all of the taping she had to do when she painted last time, so she showed Anna what to do. Cassia almost backed out when she saw how much taping needed done, but Anna talked her back into it by promising to do all of the taping 😀
First they painted up near all of the trim and the corners…
…and someone had a little fun!

Soooo many places to cover!
I just love this picture! Cassia in the background, oblivious and intent on painting while perched on the bathtub, Bekah taking the picture, and Anna…doing I-don’t-know-what 😀 It’s so cute!
The Mess!!! Daddy even pulled the toilet up while they repainted, because it needed a new seal anyway. That bathroom was literally out of commission for a couple of days, unless all you needed to do was wash your hands 🙂
The Mess from another angle 🙂
After they painted it all lavender, they took a drywall brush and dipped it in white paint for a textured look. Remember how I wasn’t sure lavender was going to look right? Well I was happily surprised at how well this lavender complimented the blue in the linoleum, and we all started getting excited at how good it was looking 😀
More mess…
The rest of us started getting pretty excited about this ‘makeover’ and we all decided to pitch in money to get a few new things…like the shower curtain, the doily, and the towel shelf 😀 Leah was the ‘head decorator’ and kind of took charge of that part with the rest of us helping out.
We wanted something new to hold our towels (which we thought really needed replacing, but decided to do that another time!) because we were tired of the old green wire rack and it wouldn’t match our purple theme very well anyway. We thought about trying to cram them all back into the cupboards, but that didn’t seem like it was going to work well. Susannah and Anna went to a few antique stores to try to find something. She found a big black shelf that could have worked and was a decent price, but we would have had to repaint it. Then she found some crates that we could stack on each other, but they were $15 each and we wanted 4-6. Then she tried one more antique place and found THIS! And it was only about $20. And we didn’t have to do anything to it, plus it had the ‘crate look’ we wanted 😀
We found a blue jar in the basement and unwrapped a bunch of hotel soaps to put in it for show, then someone found the little glass jar to put the Q-tips in. Some of the girls would make a great show out of getting a Q-tip and say, “I feel so fancy!” Lol!
We all had to give our opinion on whether to turn the mirror sideways or keep it vertical. Leah is holding it up for us to see how it looks.
This was Leah’s masterpiece! She found this old wood crate out in our barn (we used to use it for our playhouses 🙂 ), then she painted it and distressed the edges to make it look old. We wanted a clock in there, but we didn’t want the old one. Cassia had the clock pieces, and so we decided to add it to the crate…it was PERFECT! Leah also painted the blue block on top and made it reversible…so you never know if it’s going to say ‘believe’ or ‘hope’ the next time you walk in there 😀
UPDATE! We realized that we didn’t really put very many ‘after’ pictures…so we took a few more 😉
Bathroom complete! [minus the new shower curtain that we were waiting for to arrive]
The new shower curtain (we love it!)
Also while Mommy was gone, the washer’s water sensor decided to quit working, so it didn’t know when to stop filling with water and would spill all over the floor.
The carpet was already very old, and we were noticing just how dirty it really was, so with Daddy’s permission, Anna and I decided that we wanted to rip up the carpet 😀
It was oh-so-dirty and wet from the frequent washer-floods, we were quite happy to get it out of there 🙂
It used to be a bathroom, so there were still holes in the floor where the sink pipes used to go into the basement. Whenever the washer overflowed after that, we took a big squeegee and just scooted the water over to the hole and down to the already wet basement 😀 😀
The sub floor was rotting and water would ooze out of it when you stepped on it, so Daddy showed me how to take out the nails 🙂 🙂 I was in there hammering away and one of my sisters said, “You sound like a guy!” Ummmmm…I’m not sure if that is a compliment or not???!!! 😀
Somewhere we have pictures of the boys helping Daddy put down the new vinyl floor, but I can’t find them anywhere 😛 But you can see the beautiful result of their hard work below! We love it! One of the girls said it reminded them of Andes mints 🙂
Leah, Bekah and I went to the airport on August 14th to pick Mommy up. We all love airplanes, and we always get excited when we get to go to the airport 😀
We had to try out the moving walkway, just because 😀 The lights above lit up and played a ‘note’ when you walked under them, so it was pretty entertaining to see them all light up and make different tones with all of the people walking below them 😀
We found Mommy in the luggage claim area…and we were sooooo happy to see her (and were bursting with our secret that we couldn’t tell yet!)
Mommy came home late that night, but everyone stayed up to show her the surprise 😀 We don’t have any pictures from that, but she DID like it very much! We all stood in the bathroom telling her how we did this or that, or the stories of what happened along the way, and everyone was trying to talk at once. I think she was able to figure out what we were all saying, hehe! It was fun 😀
After that project we started thinking of another room we could repaint/redo because it was so much fun 😀 Though I think another room will have to wait another day!

Haha! That is so pretty! It sounds like something we did when my mom was away once. We re-did the whole bathroom (even the toilet), painted it, new mirror, flooring and shower curtain. It is funny to see pictures of you doing what we have done before! It actually looks like you had fun. 😉 Though, it gets a little tiresome after a while, doesn’t it. 😉
This post makes me want to makeover a room! Although all the rooms in my family’s house already look pretty nice. (Well, except for my bedroom, but that’s only because I’m having problems unpacking after being gone for three years!)
I’m really looking forward to hearing about the bus trip! I took my first Greyhound trip this summer to Niagara Falls. And since that was so much fun, I took another one a couple weeks ago- this time all the way across the country! It’s definitely a fun, inexpensive way to travel!
I love it when you do “redecorating” posts! All of you have such a great eye for that kind of thing! Did you grow up watching your parents do stuff like that, or did you take a class somewhere? It always looks so professional, even on the posts where you just rearrange your rooms!
Thanks Allie!
I’m not really sure where we got it from…Daddy is into construction and remodeling, but as far as decorating goes, we’ve always played around with it since we were little (sometimes to Mommy’s chagrin when we tried ‘redecorating’ as 9 year olds, lol!). Pinerest is a great inspiration now 🙂 🙂

You all did a lovely job, girls!! 🙂
How is your family doing? We need to catch up! 🙂
Thank you, Rachel 🙂 🙂
We are doing well! I was thinking of you the other day, wondering how you all were 😉
♥hugs!

Wow! You girls did a stellar job on that bathroom! You can come do some room make-overs for me anytime. LOL! Great work!
Nice job. Your Mum must have been pleased!
Will show this post to my kids. Hint, hint kids…. 🙂
