Exactly one year ago I was traipsing around town with Susannah when she said: “Oh, are you getting your permit today?”
Me: “No.”
Susannah: “Why not?”
Me: “Oh! Well…okay, lets do it!”
I hadn’t planned on taking the test that day but since she was fine with taking me to the BMV, and I felt I had reviewed the manual enough we went ahead and did it.
I walked away legal to start learning to drive on the roads. π I stuck to only country roads for awhile! π
228 days later, April 19, 2013, true it was the middle of April but it was cold and lightly snowing, a bit nervous and really excited I was back at the BMV (armed with my paper that had all 50 of my driving hours recorded π ), ready to take my drivers test!
It went really well, even the parallel parking–the worst thing I remembered doing was going faster on a yellow light. π π
This time I walked away legal to drive by myself! Β Oh Sweet Liberty! π
It’s funny to remember where I started, in a our local high school parking lot with Daddy as my instructor! (He’s the best!!! π ) And the really scared feeling of how the van moves BY ITSELF when you take your foot off the brake…I didn’t know it did that! I was only going 10 mph and it was scary….
The time when I encountered my first stoplight and I was like “wow! I’m moving up in this world!”
Or when I passed someone for the first time and got purely scared when I saw a car way yonder on the horizon coming straight! for! me! (he really was far enough away π ) and ended up exceeding the speed limit by a lot! Once I finally got to my side of the road and slowed down to normal speed I told Daddy “you’re never going to want to ride with me again!” He replied “it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t wonderful either” to which I laughed heartily! π And to add to it I looked in my rear view mirror and saw the truck that I had passed…turned. All that for nothing, other than quite the experience!
And when I was slowing down to turn right, there was a car opposite of me turning left, waiting on me. Cars backed up behind the car waiting on me, and more cars waiting on both of us on the road we were turning onto. I was so new to driving I wasn’t sure who’s right of way it was and I frantically asked Susannah “WHO’S TURN IS IT??!”
It makes me laugh to remember how the simplest things were huge things to me then! π After a year I’m definitely not a pro, but I don’t get scared now to exceed 10 mp. π

How exciting! π I’m looking forward to learning how to drive. It will be a useful thing…..
Yes! It is quite useful indeed! π ~Cassia
that’s great you have your licence now! In Australia, you have to do 150hours as a learner, and then you also have to get a Provisional 1 and Provisional 2 licence (where you can drive on your own, but your not allowed to do the full speed limit)!
Oh my goodness! I guess my 50hrs. weren’t so bad after all…you must have extra good drivers in Australia. π ~Cassia
lol! No….we have lots of REALLY bad drivers!
Wow a year?! I can’t wait to get my sweet liberty. I never new yo were afraid to go over 10 mp. It was 30 for me (country gal coming thru, out of my way). π Though i have to saw passing a car for the first time was very similar. Only thing different was the truck didn’t turn.
Yup, time flies! π Don’t worry, before you know it you’ll being driving by yourself, too! π ~Cassia
