Quote of the Week

There are many of us who are willing to do great things for the Lord, but few of us who are willing to do little things.

The story of Todd and Angie Smith’s baby girl Audrey.  They found out during the pregnancy that they wouldn’t be able to keep little Audrey because , but they chose to keep her as long as possible and experience as many things with her as they could while she was still with them.  Such a sweet, sweet story (that will also make you cry!)

The Recipe Box

This has become one of our favorite breakfasts 🙂  Perhaps not as healthy as a breakfast could be, but we do eat an egg or two along with it to get some protein, so that makes it all better, right?!

Lime Curd and Scones

Lime Curd

1/2 c. lime juice

1 1/2 c. sugar

1 stick butter, softened

4 eggs

1/8 tsp. salt

Cream together the sugar and butter in a 2 quart saucepan.  Add the eggs one at a time, beating each one well into the mixture.  Add lime juice and salt and stir it in well.  Cook it over low heat, stirring often, until thickened, about 10 min.  The curd will thicken at at 175 degrees, or just below a simmer.  It thickens lots more when it cools.

If you want lemon curd, do this recipe exactly the same only use lemon juice instead of the lime juice.  We discovered we really liked the lime even more than the lemon.

We usually make this up the night before so it’s nice and thick by the morning 🙂

We originally found this recipe via Ina Garten on Food Network.  If you want to do it the ‘proper way’, go here if you want a few more steps 😀  This is our simplified version and it still tastes yummy, so we didn’t mind doing it a tad differently.

Classic Cream Scones

2 c. flour

1/4 c. sugar

2 t. baking powder

1/8 t. salt

1/3 c. softened butter

1/2 c. heavy cream (we use milk)

1 egg

1 1/2 t. vanilla

1 egg mixed with 1 t. water for glaze (optional)

Preheat the oven to 425°F.  Lightly grease a baking sheet or baking stone.  Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.  Cut in the butter into the mixture.  Beat together cream/milk, egg and vanilla.  Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined.  Pat out into a 1/2 inch thickness and cut out with a floured glass or cup.  Paint the egg ‘glaze’ on top of the scones and bake for 12 – 15 minutes.

how-to-clean-your-dishwasher-1.22.13

Our dishwasher was so gross.  For some reason even though we run water and soap through those things two or three times a day, it does not keep the inside clean 😀  Slime builds up and we had a bad case of mildew.  About every month or two we have to scrub out the inside to make it clean again.  But you have to balance yourself over the door and your leg and stomach muscles get a real workout by the time you’re done (which is about an hour or so later).

We saw this pin on Pinterest (that wonderful place) which led us to One Thing By Jilee blog, so one night when we had had tacos for supper (and therefore made less dishes), we decided Jessica decided we would wash the dishes by hand and clean out the dirty dishwasher the Pinterest way 😀

[our ‘after’ picture…we forgot to take a ‘before’ :P]

She put in the vinegar for a cycle, opened up the door and it still looked the same.  Then she put in the baking soda for a cycle and opened up the door and it STILL looked the same, though we’re sure the vinegar and baking soda was actually doing some cleaning.  The next morning, bright and early, she put in the bleach for a cycle, opened up the door and it was sparkling clean!  We are so excited to have found a cleaning process that isn’t so backbreaking and that WORKS!  Click on the picture or click here to find out how you can clean your dishwasher, too 😉

Cute Quotes

Once after Graham (the little boy we watch)  was done in the bathroom, he came out without washing his hands.  He saw Jessica look at him as he came out of the bathroom and he smiled and said, ” I washed my hands wif ky-et (quiet) water.” 😀

When Jessica suggested that they go back and wash them with noisy water, he said, “Why?”

“Because noisy water washes better than quiet water!”

Noah: “Graham can come with me.”
Isaiah: “No! He comes with me!”
Noah: “Graham, do you want to go with me or Isaiah?”
Graham: “You”
Isaiah: “Then who am I supposed to play with…AIR?!!”

Noah and Isaiah were getting ready to play “Bible Old Man”, which is like Old Maid but with Bible characters.  Instead of an old maid card, you have the Methuselah card.   Bekah overheard them talking about the Methuselah card:

Isaiah: We don’t want the bad Noah, okay?
Noah: No, it’s Moses!

Isaiah was telling Leah about the flowers around the flagpole, and how they’re coming up.  Then he was describing how on these certain flowers (tulips) the leaves were starting to ‘wiggle’ (a.k.a. how the leaves curl).  And the purple ones (hyacinths) were staring to ‘bust’ (bud).  😀

That Dutch flash mob was advertising the re-opening of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam last month (they have a lot of Rembrandt paintings there). The banner at the end says, “Our heroes are back!”
