…Because it is a mess! πŸ™‚

This picture doesn’t do it justice, but it’s our bathtub filled half way with tomatoes.

So today is tomato day! We’re working on making tomato sauce. πŸ™‚

This is what my house has looked like for the past few weeks. We have enough salsa to last a lifetime! I just wish we had as many helpers as you do!

That’s a lot of tomatoes! Our green beans were about like that earlier this summer. πŸ˜‰ We were canning them for two or three days straight!

Boy, does that ever look familiar! πŸ™‚ We have been processing tons of tomatoes the past few weeks too! It definitely is a lot of work and mess, but it is fun to work as a team and get a lot done. I love seeing pictures of other people doing exactly the same thing we are doing these days. πŸ™‚ I noticed the glass baking pans you were using – how do you make your sauce, and what are the pans used for? A friend of ours told us how she has always done it, and now we always do it the way she told us – it works great! You know how there is always the problem of the sauce being too runny. . . well, what we do, is hang the tomato puree in a clean pillowcase over night. By morning a LOT of the juice has drained out and the sauce is a nice and thick (sometimes all night is a little too long). Now we store our “tomato sauce pillowcases” in our kitchen cupboard for just that purpose! LOL! πŸ™‚
Have a good time canning…and we’ll do the same! πŸ™‚

I’ve never heard of that method before πŸ™‚ We puree the tomatoes and strain it through a colander. Then we fill the baking dishes with the puree and bake it at 325 degrees in the oven and stir it every so often until thick, and then can it. πŸ™‚ The dishes used to be a pain to wash until we started taking them outside and filling them with water to soak until dish washing time.
We used to put the puree in crock pots too, but that takes f.o.r.e.v.e.r. πŸ™‚

Also…a great tip if your going to do it the oven way. Spray the edges of the pan real well with cooking spray first. It cleans up *real* nice! πŸ™‚

We were blessed by a gift of six 5-gallon buckets FULL of tomatoes! So we canned, canned, canned for several days. I like the picture of your bathtub… πŸ˜€

Interesting πŸ™‚ We have a victorio, which it looks like it’s the same thing, that we use for applesauce. It seems that using it for tomatoes would decrease the final quantity, but I guess cooking it down does too πŸ™‚

OH HOW I (actually) MISS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™ We ALWAYS can tomatoes and as a result of the drought and then all the truly wonderful rain that followed it (but swelled then stretched and cracked πŸ™ our FEW tomatoes in the process), unless someone gives us a sufficient amount, this will be the first in years we won’t be canning πŸ™ πŸ™ πŸ™
the bathtub is a hysterical yet WONDERFUL idea! Y didn’t we ever think of that!? πŸ˜‰
