Well Okay, I Might Just Trade My “ZZZ” For An “OY”
Sears Tower.
Over these past couple years, some of my family members have been correcting me in my grammar and pronunciations when I talk. (Not all the time, but occasionally.)
( Which, right now I highly appreciate! 😉 ) Thank you to the grammar police in our house! 🙂
“Aten isn’t a word,”
“Eaten and ate are, but not aten.”
Right now Iowa is one of my words that I have a terrible time pronouncing.
“eye-uh-wuh,”
“eye-O-wuh?”
“No, EYE-uh-wuh.”
And I keep trying at least another five times or more till I say it right or close to right.
Illinois is another one, which brings me to the reason of this post. We go back and forth teasingly debating this one:
Me: “I know that it’s ih-luh-NOY, but I think that ih-luh-noyZZZZZ sounds better, I will change on other words that I say wrong, but I won’t on IllinoiS.”
Grammar Police: “But that isn’t the proper way to say it.”
Me: ” But IllinoiZZZZ sounds better.”
Grammar Police: ” But it’s not right.”
Me: “Even the dictionary says ZZZ.”
Grammar Police:”The dictionary also says that supercalifragilsticexpialidocious is a word. Your just being stubborn.” 🙂
Me: humph *sigh*
The debate usually goes nowhere because I won’t give in. 🙂
Well, tonight I was thinking about it, and maybe, just maybe…I’ll change.
After all, IllinoY is the proper and right way to say it. Hmm, I wonder where I’ve heard that? 🙂
So, to our IllinoY readers, how do you say your own states name, with a “OY” or a “ZZZ”?
And speaking of ZZZ, it’s 12:37 a.m. I think that it’s time to go to bed! 😉

I say Illinois with an “OY” at the end (I guess that means the “S” is silent), which seems to be the right pronounciation, as the “grammar police” pointed out. (I’m pretty sure anyone who tried to add “ZZZ” to the end was told that the “S” is silent).
I often change up the way I say Illinois. But I pronounce the “Sears” as in “Sears Tower” WILLIS. (Yes, the name was changed in 2009!) 🙂
However, the state pronunciation that bugs me the most is the one I live in- Oregon. No one outside the state knows how to pronounce the name, and only have the people who do live here pronounce it correctly!
It’s hard to tell since I can’t actually hear you say it, but the second one looks more correct. Only foreigners emphasize the EE. (Foreigners often also pronounce the last syllable “gone”.)
OY-vay!! 😀 That is soo funny! And speaking of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, have you ever watched “The Sound of Music?” It’s my absolute FAVORITE movie!!!!

Well, I knew that that word was in Mary Poppins, but I wanted to know if you’ve seen The Sound of Music because that’s my absolute favorite movie!! Oops! Already said that, didn’t I?!! 😀
Hi! You might have some dutch roots somehow… Aten (we write ‘eten’) is the dutch word for ‘to eat’!
Overhere we live in a tiny little country but it seems that each and every town has it’s own dialict in speaking…probably in your country too?!

So do you pronounce it “Or-Ee-gun?” Or “Or-gin’? Or neither? 😀
