The day before Thanksgiving and we are (almost) all in the kitchen getting the food ready for tomorrow’s dinner…with friends that are coming up from Texas!!  We are having a larger variety of pies then we usually do, partially because I decided we needed chocolate pies since there was no chocolate on the menu.

Confession: I am no pie maker. I don’t like doing it and I don’t like eating them…most of the time. Some pies I like and I’ll eat the filling and leave the crust. It’s mainly the crust I don’t like 🙂  But I love pumpkin pie (minus the crust), so I started making gingersnap crust for them…way more delicious (but time consuming if you’re making your own gingersnaps)!!!

The main thing I don’t like about making pie crusts is the edges. 1)figuring out what to do, 2)time consuming, and  3)they burn easy.  But Pinterest changed my life!!!  Not really, but I do enjoy doing the edges more now that I have more ideas 🙂

Earlier when I was bemoaning the fact that I didn’t know what to do, Anna remembered something she saw on Pinterest and told me about it. Bingo! Pinterest is so helpful.  Found it, had a lot of fun with it and didn’t burn it!! 🙂  I also found some other fun ones:
Checker Board. I wanted to do this on our pumpkin pies, but was afraid they would burn black after 50 minutes of baking.

What not to do? Drop the crust in the middle of baking.

How did the crust drop in the middle of baking? (I know you’re wondering 🙂 )

I had it wrapped in foil so it wouldn’t over bake and half way through I removed the foil….and the pan slipped out of my hands and nearly landed upside down in the oven, but I caught it and the crust “only” folded in half.  It’s amazing I didn’t burn my hands grabbing it like that!  I was able to salvage it for the most part, but it ruined the edging.

    Wow, those are some gorgeous pie crusts! Aren’t we lucky to have the Internet? This year I found the Norpro silicone pie crust shield. The one I bought was supposed to cover a 10″ pie plate but the pie plate I was using has a decorative edge and it wouldn’t quite fit onto it, but it worked just fine laid on the pie upside down. My crust came out perfect and no need to mess around with a hand fashioned aluminum foil ring. The chocolate pie looks delicious!

    I made 8 pies. 😉 I luv pies and I luv crust (homemade only)! ;0)

    I made:

    3 pumpkin custard (Amish recipe)

    1 Carmel pecan

    1 pumpkin pecan

    1 cherry

    1 custard

    1 chocolate peanut butter cup (can’t wait to try!)

    We are driving now, to Ohio.

    that is a cool way to decorate the pie crust! I must disagree with you thought, about pastry….I LOVE pastry! 🙂

    Each of us older girls at our house made pies. My thirteen year old sister made a cherry pie! And, my ten year old sister made her first pie; a delicious apple pie. My mom made a pumpkin pie. All of them were homemade crusts of course! 🙂 And, I made a chocolate ice cream pie. We also had homemade caramel to drizzle on top…I hope that you had a wonderful thanksgiving!! I am so thankful for everything that God has given me!! 🙂

    I made a cherry pie. My older sister made a Chocolate Ice cream pie, my younger sister made her first apple pie and my Mom made a pumkin pie! They are/were yummy! 😉 Happy Thanksgiving!!! <3

    My sons made the pies this year, made with pumpkins we grew ourselves. One made the standard plain pumpkin pie, and the other was a cream cheese pumpkin pie recipe we found in a Gold Medal cookbook. They were both good, but I would have to say I liked the plain the best. The other one called for zest of an Orange and a lemon, and that zest tended to overpower the pumpkin taste completely.
    Love your crust ideas – thanks for sharing those! I would never have thought of such a thing – some people are So creative!

    Your pie looks yummy! I made a total of eight pies, four pumpkin and four different fruit pies. After 29 years of marriage, 14 children, 4 of whom are married and given me 7 grands, I have made many pies. Pumpkin is probably the most favored. All four of my pumpkins were awful! Hubby said, “Not awful, just…bland.” I don’t know what happened! I made them like usual, but the brand of pumpkin was different…maybe that was it? I do know we did not go hungry and still had a wonderful and blessed day!

    Someone else, one of our guests, brought our pies for Thaksgiving-so we were spoiled:). We had a very wonderful, blessed day and alot of people too.
